Paul Arrested in Jerusalem: Some Jews from Asia (what is now western Turkey) were in Jerusalem. When they noticed Paul in the temple they stirred up the crowd accusing Paul of teaching "all men everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place." (NIV) Acts 21:29
Their accusations where not true, but the "whole city" became aroused. He was dragged from the temple and the crowd attempted to kill him. He was rescued by Roman soldiers who then arrested Paul. The Roman commander ordered that Paul, who seemed to be the center of the trouble, be taken to the barracks and flogged. As they were getting ready to flog him, Paul revealed that he was a Roman citizen (which means he had a right to a public trial). He was then released from his chains. However, he remained under the protection of the Roman Commander, who started an investigation to determine what had happened.
